- Improved aerodynamics
- Redesigned Speed Step
- 5g lighter head than the rest of the market
- Light 8-1-1 titanium
- Responsive face
- Redesigned sole
There are multiple loft options which include 9°, 10.5° and 12°. Each of these options can be further customized and adjusted up or down with a mere 1° or 2°. The sole of the club has been redesigned but they haven`t been proven to improve the aerodynamics. The driver comes with medium to high spin depending on your choices. This might be too much for some players and that is why Callaway introduced a lower, professional, version.
The XR 16 can be 5 to 15 grams lighter than competitor`s models which makes it easier to move through the air. This was partly achieved through the use of lighter 8-1-1 titanium which has more aluminum, as used in the aerospace industry. It reduces the weight while maintaining acceptable strength. This material choice also makes the head chassis lighter by 2g which adds to the 9g R-MOTO face which has longer spines which allow for a better and more controlled bending. When hitting the ball, the face has better flexion which allows for increased force transmitted to the ball.
The design of the driver is the main strength as it’s been thoroughly researched. It comes with a larger design which in theory means it is more forgiving, especially to the shots which are not made right in the center point of the face. This was somewhat balanced with slower air mobility due to the increased mass. To even the mobility out, Callaway made the center of gravity lower which allowed them to have a lighter final product which can vary from 5 to 15 grams in reduced weight compare to the competition. The manufacturer also updated the Speed Step to use similar lines to the ones of Boeing.
Many see the Callaway XR 16 as a niche driver. But it actually achieved to bring some thorough research into the driver`s market. With a lower gravity point, increased aerodynamics and a titanium/aluminum construction, the driver combines some of the latest technologies to achieve its goal. With a more flexible face which has longer ribs that are more forgiving but also change the way in which it makes an impact with the ball, the driver can be a good options for those looking for straight and long shots without unnecessary features.
