Pros
- Improved MOI
- 9-1-1 titanium
- 7% larger face
- Larger Footprint
- Improved design
- Adjustable hosel
- 2° of loft change in three increments
Cons
Overall
The hosel comes with the same 2° of loft change. It can be adjusted to 3 options: 1°, 0.6° and 0.4°. The starting head loft can also be used with three settings: 9.5°, 10.5° and 12°. The sleeves of the hosel have also been improved with materials. The old plastic has now been replaced with aluminum construction.
The sole weight is also upgraded as its geared more backwards. This means you`ll have a better draw. The face of the crown is also 1° more closed which might not impact aerodynamics in a significant manner. It is also a new beginning for TaylorMade as the club comes with a unique draw (curving from right to left).
Performance
In terms of performance, the head vastly impacts the ball`s speed and carry. If you go with the lower head, you will get less spin but more speed. The launch would also be lower so you could get better distances. If you adjust the hosel back up you`ll see the increased spin but you`ll also feel the balance of the head changing. It is a matter of adjusting and trying out hosel spin options and head loft options. These adjustments are variables of the 9.5° head, but you could also try the 10.5° heads.
Design
The impressive 25g of weight moved back to the sole of the club make a huge difference with improved resistance on side-strikes. The face of the contact area is increased by 7% which means you`ll get more of the center-spot chances and improve on your ability to hit the ball in the same spot.
Conclusion
The TaylorMade M2 Driver comes with a softer sound due to the added weight tracks. In terms of looks it reminds of the previous version as it doesn`t have significant individual characteristics. The club comes with an improved titanium sole which works great with the carbon composite (6 layers) to provide an improved balance.
Upgrades continue through the Speed Pocket which has an improved flexibility than the previous M2 driver. This will work great for players looking to add as much speed as possible. If you don`t need any other advanced features the M2 driver can be a solid option and a good upgrade from the previous model.
